Delete your GENIE account
You can delete your GENIE account at any time, from inside the app or from this page. This page explains exactly what is deleted, what is kept, and why — before you decide.
1. How to delete your account
If you still have the app: open GENIE and go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. This is available to students, lecturers, and parents, sponsors and guardians.
If you no longer have the app: email privacy@thegenieos.com from the address registered on your GENIE account, with the subject line “Delete my account”. We verify that you control the registered address before acting, and we respond within 30 days. If you can still sign in, the in-app route is faster and needs no verification step.
2. You have 30 days to change your mind
The moment you confirm, your account is closed: you are signed out on every device and you cannot sign back in. Nothing is destroyed yet. Your account is deleted 30 days later, and at any point before then you can cancel and get everything back — using the form at the bottom of this page.
3. Two options
Withdraw from the platform — the standard option
Your account is deleted. We destroy your sign-in credentials, your name, email address, phone number, profile photo, device and biometric verification references, push-notification registrations and support conversations.
We keep your GENIE Master Student Record and your GABS credential, so that you can obtain proof of your record later and so an institution asking us to verify it can be answered. We remove your contact details from that record too — it keeps your name, matriculation number and programme, and nothing else.
Erase permanently — irreversible
Everything above, plus your GENIE Master Student Record and your GABS credential.
This cannot be undone. If an institution or an employer later asks GENIE to confirm your academic record or verify your GABS credential, we will tell them we hold nothing. You will not be able to obtain a GABS certificate, and we will not be able to reissue one. Choose this only if you are certain.
4. What we keep, and why
Two categories survive both options. We would rather tell you plainly than let you discover it later.
Your institution’s academic record — anonymised, not deleted
Your attendance, enrolment, grades and examination eligibility are your institution’s records, not ours. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 your institution is the data controller for them and GENIE only processes them on your institution’s instructions. That means a student cannot ask GENIE to erase an institution’s attendance evidence, and GENIE could not lawfully do it if asked.
What we do instead is remove you from those rows. The record survives as a number in your institution’s statistics; the identity attached to it is replaced with a random label that cannot be turned back into your name. If you want the underlying academic record erased as well, that request has to go to your institution, and we will tell them you have asked us to delete your account.
Financial and audit records — kept for the period the law requires
Payment, fee-clearance and audit records are retained for the statutory period. These do not carry your contact details after deletion.

6. Cancel a deletion
If you asked us to delete your account and have changed your mind, enter the email address and password you used for GENIE. This works for 30 days after you made the request; after that the deletion has run and cannot be reversed.
